JAPANESE INFLUENCES - VAN GOGH

The ukiyo-e artists developed a complex and effective
language of textures and patterns to distinguish between
different areas of the painting.  Van Gogh's pen drawings
employed an equally complex system of marks to describe
light, texture, substance and depth, as well as to provide a
decorative diplay of color.  Some of his well known
pen drawings tha used this technique are the plain of La
Crau
and Sailing Boats Coming Ashore.
