Etienne Argo (1802-1892) This stamp was released August 24, 1848. Argo was the Director of Postes at the time. As Director he wrote Article 5, which states one must lick a stamp to affix it to an envelope. Once certified with a stamp it can be sent with confidence.

This stamp is to commemorate Nicholas Appert. He is he inventor of the process of conserving food using a heater hermetically sealed in a bowl.
