Albert Roussel was born in Tourcoing, an industrial town in France. He grew up in a wealthly family was in the textile business. His first love was the sea and second was music. At the age of eleven, he became an orphan and lived with his grandfather, who was the major of Tourcoing. Later this year, his grandfather dies and Roussel lived with his aunt and her husband.

In age seventeen, Roussel joined the Navel Academy where he continued to write music. Most of his music included the theme of saying good buy to his loved ones. While at the Academy, his health failed him. He was sent on leave to a convalescent home in Tunisia.

In 1898, Roussel begins to study at the Schola Cantorum under Vincent d'Indy. At this time, he wrote Opus. Roussel completed his studies at Vincent d'Indy's Schola Cantorum at the age of 39. One of Roussel's music teachers influences his music by teaching him to repeat themes in all of his movements. This technique also influenced Claude Debussy's music impressionism.

Roussel married Marries Blanche Preisach on April 7 in 1908.

In 1935, large forest fires brought out in Vasterival, were Rossel kept all of his compositions. Roussel's health was affected due to the fires. He later suffered from angina.

In 1837, Roussel died of a heart attack on August 23 at Royan, France.
