Discovered on the Campus Martius the so-called altar was probably a statue base (of Marcus Antonius). The work juxtaposes the Hellenistic baroque (Poseidon & Amphitrite) with Roman realism (Census; in the Paris Louvre). The suovetaurilia was a sacrifice to Mars (standing at left) of a bull a ram and a pig. Plaster cast of the frieze in the Louvre.
