Heraclea was founded by Phillip of Macedon who named it after the mythic Greek heo. It was conquored by the Romans in the 2nd century, and became an important episcopal center from the 4th to the 6th cetury. However, the city was gradually abandoned after a stong earthquake devastated it in the early 6th c.
