The work is based upon Ovid's Metamorphoses. King Tereus could not resist his sister-in-law Philomela raped her. To keep her quiet he tore out her tongue. When Tereus' wife discovered the crime she killed their son Itys and served his flesh at a dinner hosted by Tereus.
