The sculpture was not labelled in the museum but contains an inscription with the name of Ipomedon in Greek. It could represent a Roman gladiator with that name, or if the work were done later it could represent the Anglo-Norman romance Ipomedon. This was the story of Prince Ipomedon of Apulia who undertook adventures to prove to the queen of Calabria that he was worthy of her love. It was written by Hue de Rotelande c. 1174-90. In 1146, Tripolitania and Cyrenaica were conquered by the Normans of Sicily.
