Addis Ababa. Ethiopia.
Abuna Aregari was the founder of the 6th century Debre Damo monastery which is located on top of a 3000 meter amba, a flat topped hill with impregnable cliffs all around. According to legend a flying serpent carried the founding monk to the top. Today the monastery can only be reached by a steep climb and a 15 meter leather rope.
