This comparison shows two couples, one dating from the Old Kingdom, the other from the New Kingdom; yet in both cases the figures stand or sit side by side, facing rigidly to the front. The figures are almost completely bilaterally symmetrical, and the body axis does not twist. Arms are held close to the body and legs are close together. In looking at these figures, you can easily imagine the blocks of stone from which they were carved. You may have noticed that it was impossible to tell the age of the figures; they are idealized and timeless. There is no individual motion or emotion. Such a portrayal was important for the role the Old Kingdom figure was to play, for it was intended to serve as an abiding place of the soul of the deceased for eternity. While the seated couple from the New Kingdom share the same formal structure with the Old Kingdom pair, their costumes are much more elegant. Mycerinus wears a relatively simple headdress and the hair of his queen is simply dressed. Wigs were commonly worn by Egyptians during the New Kingdom period, and this couple wears very elaborate ones. The clothing of both couples is made from linen. However, the Old Kingdom couple wears a heavy weave that clings to the shapes of their bodies, and the clothing of the New Kingdom couple is made of very delicate pleated linen. These differences will help you distinguish New Kingdom from Old Kingdom figures, but while details of costume differ, both adhere to the old figural conventions.
