By way of a series of panels; the frieze tells the story of heroic Telephos: mythic founder of Pergamon. This panel and a half depicts cult ceremonies in the sanctuary of Dionysos. The Telephos frieze was originally placed within the perimeter walls of the Great Altar of Zeus. It tells the mythical narrative legend of Telephos -- the son of Herakles and founder of Pergamon. The dramatic story is conveyed through a successive series of marble panels along the interior walls of the central altar courtyard.
