Here is the interior of the peristyled courtyard of the House of the Amorini in Pompeii. The courtyard, filled with trees and flowers, made a cool and welcome retreat from the activity of the city. The courtyards were often decorated with sculpture, much of it copied from Greek prototypes.
This particular courtyard also doubled as a theater. Performances were staged on the raised central area.
