NORTHERN WEI DYNASTY Anonymous
(386 - 534)
This small Chinese bronze Buddha, which was found in a 9th century Scandinavian tomb, demonstrates the movement of precious objects over incredibly long distances in ancient times. The Buddha undoubtedly passed through many hands as it made its way across the vast Eurasian continent from China to Sweden. One wonders what the Viking chieftain who last possessed it thought as he held it in his hand, turning it over and over.
