There are at least three versions of this. Others are in Birmingham and Tate Britain. It was painted as a memorial to Elizabeth Siddal who committed suicide by laudanum overdose in 1962. Depicted is the moment of death as described in the Vita Nuova. Florence is in the background and Dante and the figure of Love.
