Algeria has produced wine for many years starting with Persian imports. The Numidians exported wine to Rome. During the time of the French occupation many of the farms were planted with grape vines and Algeria exported a great deal of wine to France. Toward the end of the Colonial period Algeria exported 500 million gallons a year. Production is now around 15 million gallons per year and the Algerians are working on improving the vineyards in the northwest part of the country.
