The unusual mountains are known as karst hills. They are created by the solution of thick limestone layers in very humid environments where the terrain develops underground rivers which then cause collapse forming sink holes and elongated canyons. When the process goes to extremes these features enlarge and merge leaving isolated remnants and very steep-sided hills like the ones seen here.
