PHOENICIAN Anonymous (active c. 1500 BCE - 64 BCE)
(active c. 1500 BCE - 64 BCE)

The Phoenicians lived first on the Levantine coast on the Mediterranean sea, in what is now Lebanon and Syria. They were avid sailors who traded with the Egyptians, the Spanish, the ancient Britons, the Maltese, the Sardinians, and went as far as the Black Sea. They established colonies, the most important of which was Carthage in present-day Tunisia. They were in competition with the Romans who finally defeated them in 64 BCE, after a famous series of battles known as the Punic wars.
