Canton is located on the south coast of China. The convenient
transportation systems of both sea and river made the town an ideal foreign
trade port. Here European and Chinese merchants negotiated orders of porcelains
such as quantity, price and design. The orders would be send upriver to
JingDeZhen where porcelain factories were located. From the early 18th
century, with the increased demand for enameled porcelains, Europe established
factories in Canton for overglaze painting. Canton was not only important
for being a trade center but also famous for its enamel ware. |
