The school was founded by Sarah Porter in 1843 to proide the best education possible for the daughters of the citizens of Farmington. It started with 25 girls and now has more than 300 students and maintans the high level of education begun by Sarah Porter. Miss Porter stressed physical education as well as intellectual achievement and would not allow her girls to wear the bustles and tight corsets that there fashionable in the mid 19th century but insisted that they wear comfortable clothes and that they engage in physical activity
