The Temple of Literature consists of a temple and a series of buildings that functioned as Vietnam's first university. Originally founded in 1070, the temple was dedicated to Confucius. It was reconstructed in the 13th century, then destroyed and restored at various times since, although it retains much of its ancient style. The university was begun in 1076 under the Ly dynasty (1009-1225)and was further developed in the 15th century under the Lé Dynasty. The temple was restored/ rebuilt in 1999.
