French Colonial
The prison was originally built to hold 450 prisoners, but by the 1930s it held over 2000, the majority being political prisoners. Downed American pilots were kept in the building during the Vietnam war, who called it the "Hanoi Hilton". Much of the prison was destroyed in 1997, but the old French sign of "Maison Centrale" was retained, and the remaining building is currently used as a museum which exhibits objects from the French Colonial period as well as the American period.
