Humberstone was a company town where the workers of the La Palma Saltpeter Works lived. It was founded in 1872 as Ls Palma and renamed Humberstone in1934 in honor of the founder of the works Thomas Humberstone. The town was abandoned in 1960 when nitrates were no longer in demand and the ghost town was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005.
