The Chinchorro were a hunting and gathering people who settled on the northern coast of Chile into Peru in the Atacama Desert, considered to be the driest desert on earth. They lived primarily by fishing and gathering marine resources, and their water came down from the Andes mountains. Large shell middens have been excavated that included the bones of sea mammels as well as fish.
