This marriage chest represents the story of Camille, told by Virgil in the Aeneide. She disriguished herself i battle against Aneas but then was killed. Bocacio included her in his book of distinguished women, De Mulieribus claris, in 1360 and usedthe story to admonish young woen to remain chase before marriage.
