The Greek War of Independence, also know as the Greek Revolution took place between 1821 and 1829. Independence was finally granted from the Ottoman empire in 1832. The English poet George Gordon Byron, took part in the revolution and the Greeks saw him as a national hero. He died in 1824 from a fever contracted in Greece.
