The crypt contains Pakal the Great's remains 80 feet below the Temple. Pakal's tomb was finally discovered in the mid-twentieth century during the archaeological investigations of Alberto Ruz Lhuillier, when he noted that the inner walls of the temple did not end at their junction with the floor, but continued below it. This observation, together with his deduction that the unusual holes in one large floor slab were in fact lifting holes, led him to the conclusion that something important laid under the temple.
