Ugolino dell Gheradesca was an Italian nobleman who became podesta of Pisa in 1294. He became involved in a conspiracy and was condemned by the Archbishop to be locked in a tower with his children and left to starve. The children offered to sacrifice their bodies so that their father might live. Dante tells his story in Canto 33 of the Inferno.
