(pre-1500 - present)
Benin Kingdom. Nigeria. Africa.
Washington D.C. National Gallery of Art.
Ebens (fanlike swords) were carried on ceremonial occasions and held high and twirled as a gesture of repect to the ruler. The vertical scarification marks on the figure's torso indicate he is an Edo citizen. He is a chief as indicated by the pendant on his left hip. Plaques once covered the walls of the royal palace of Benin.
