The Austerlitz column erected by Napoleon in 1810 to celebrate his victory at Austerlitz, using bronze from the melted canons captured there. The style is based upon Trajan's column in Rome. It has had a variety of names: including the Austerliz column, the Victory Column, and the Colonne de la Grande Armée. It comprises 42 bronze plaques over a stone core, and was designed by Francois Lepere and Gondoin, with many sculptors working onthe 280 feet long frieze of bas-reliefs, which were based on drawing by Bergeret. The column was topped by a figure of Napleon in Roman Dress designed by Chaudet; however this was taken down but later replaced by a copy. The column itself was dismantled durign the Commune, but was re-erected at the expense of Gustave Courbet.
