(Waldheim, Saxony, April 1877 - November 1947, Berlin)
20th c German Realist Sculpture
With the diminishing political turmoil during the 1920s, Kolbe moved away from unnatural figures and proportions. His return to identifiable subjects found appreciation by a large audience throughout Europe and the U.S. His receipt of commissions grew and was reflected in the building of his stately studio in Berlin. This figure, his 'Young Woman' of 1926 and 'A Large Seated Woman' of 1929 are typical of this period; here he offers us a young man in meditation quietly awaiting the dawn.
