Tubman was a 'conductor' on the Underground Railway in Dorchester County Maryland. She fled slavery in 1849. In 1850 she brought her sister and nine others to freedom. By 1857 she had led some 300 to freedom. A reward of $4000 was offered for her capture. During the Civil War she served as a cook; laundress and spy in the Union army.
