"Sultan al-Malik al-Nâsir, Salâh al-Dîn Yûsuf ibn al-Malik al-`Azîz was the last Ayyubid sultan of Aleppo, Syria. The object was made in Damascus or Aleppo. It is said to have been brought to Italy in the 17th century and given to Maffeo Barberini, Pope Urban VIII. The piece was transferred directly from the Palazzo Barberini to the Louvre."
