Both the Egyptian sense of pattern and treatment of space are perhaps best seen in this fresco in which we look down on the fish pond, but see profile views of fish, ducks and reeds. Notice the way the trees are arranged around the pool. The entire three-dimensional scene has been completely flattened and laid out on a two-dimensional surface as clearly as possible. As you know, later western artists moved away from the two-dimensional surface and attempted to create an illusion of three-dimensional space instead. Twentieth century artists who have returned to an emphasis on two dimensions appreciate the Egyptian approach to space. The bright colors and bold two-dimensional patterns of Egyptian painting are very close to some 20th century works by Matisse and other painters of his school.
