Long before the rise of the Assyrian political empire, Assyrian merchants had traveled throughout the ancient Near East, establishing an extensive commercial empire. An Assyrian trading colony was known in Anatolia in the 18th century BCE. Later, Assyrian traders extended their route into Egypt and India. Here we see an Assyrian trader with his scales.
