It was the attempt to deal with the forces of nature, to both merge with them and separate oneself from them that defined the features which unify the various peoples who created the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia. It was the Sumer-Akkad religion that formed the basis for the ancient temple-cities. The increasingly powerful role of the king gradually transformed the temple cities into a great state with a god-king at its head. The king was not only the protector of the forces of life, but he also personified them.
