These twin goddess from Çatal Höyük. (approximately three inches high) are absolutely amazing representations of the female nude. It is hard to believe that they were created more than 8,000 years ago. There are no comparable representations of the male at this time, or for almost 5,000 years. The goddess, who insured the return of the crops each year and who could be implored for a bountiful harvest, was very important to Neolithic people.
