"Tippu (or Tippo) Tip (Hamed Bin Mohammed el Murjebi, 1837-1905) was the most famous slaver in the Congo and East Africa. The brutal slave trade paid for elegant houses like this. Zanzibar was one of the largest ports in the Indian Ocean slave trade. Slaves were shipped north to Oman and India, east to the Dutch Indies, south to Madagascar and South Africa. It is estimated that less than a third survived the long march from inland and the packed and unsanitary conditions in the holding cells and the transport ships."
