In the legend of Oedipus, the sphinx became a scourge on the city of Thebes, stopping travelers and asking them enigmatic questions. If they could not answer, she devoured them. She asked Oedipus what walked on four legs, then on two, and finally on three. Oedipus answered her riddle correctly-- a baby, a young man and then an old man-- and thus conquered her. However, she had her revenge, as Oedipus' subsequent story relates.
