Sports contests of all kind were enjoyed. Athletes from all over the Roman world came to Rome to make their fortunes. The two boxers came from Africa. Their hands are bound, but they are not padded; instead instruments that can cause greater harm have been incorporated. This 4th century mosaic gives us a very different view of Roman women than the ones we saw earlier, this one working out with barbells. We do not know if she was a public performer, but women did perform, and some of the performances were fairly crude.
