Khirbat al-Mafjar. Jordan.
Jerusalem. Rockefeller Archaeological Museum.
This figure of a topless houri, the beautiful young women that would provide the faithful with delight in paradise , was found in the same 8th century Umayyad palace. These celestial maidens were probably reflected in the bath girls who ministered to the faithful on earth. She carries a basket of grapes.
She is made out of clay, like the figure of Caliph Harim, also from the palace. Both figures are large, and the tendency for clay to settle may account for the stocky proportions.
