14th c Syrian Mamluk Painting
(1250 - 1517)
New York. Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Device made in1200 by Al Jazari. This wonderful manuscript illumination illustrates an animal-powered device for raising water using a complex series of gears. The system seems designed to raise the water from a reservoir. The grids at the back are perhaps indicative of measuring devices. The from a manuscript copy of the "Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices" written by Al Jazari in 1200. This copy was illuminated in 1315 by the scribe and artist Farruk Ibn al-lalif.
