Mohenjo Daro. Pakistan.
Colombo. National Museum.
Apparently the practice of yoga goes far back in history, for the seal on the left with the meditating figure was made over 4000 years ago. The seal, which comes from Mohenjo-Daro on the Indus river, contains an interesting horned figure seated in the "lotus" position that would be so popular with later Indian yogis. He is generally considered to be a prototype of Siva, the lord of life and death in later Hindu belief. We will meet Siva later in this lesson.
The seated Shavite priest on the right is representative of the many wandering holy men who continue the spiritual tradition started so long ago.
