Siva was the force of life as well as death. Here he is shown with his sakti, or female energy, Parvati. Together they create the sexual energy that is the basis of life. They are the prototypes of the so-called "loving couples" that decorate so many Indian temples. The full bodies and sinuous curves are typical of Indian sculptural styles.
