The Sarmatians shared a love of the Animal Style with the other nomads of the Steppes, passing that regard on to the Germanic Goths with whom they intermarried. The piece on the left shows winged lions and griffins, as well as a creature which resembles an armadillo, all chasing each other around the plate. The rich patterning of the Animal Style was quite possibly influenced by Chinese designs which migrated West through metal mirrors, like the 2nd century Han example shown on the right. Such small objects, whether traded or stolen, made their way across the Steppes, carried by the nomads. The long-necked dragons may have provided the inspiration for later Germanic animal interlace.
