However, when Edward died shortly after Harold returned to England, he had himself crowned king. This wonderful illustration depicts Harold's coronation. He is seated on the throne, with two courtiers on one side presenting him with his sword, and the archbishop on the other, who probably officiated at the coronation. Latin inscriptions label everyone, so we know exactly who is who and what is transpiring. The patterns are bold; the figures sprightly.
