Roger shocked his contemporaries not only by the fact that he kept a harem in Eastern fashion, but because he adopted the Arabic custom of frequent bathing. This panel from the ceiling of his Palatine chapel in Palermo depicts two female musicians. Roger's court was influential in transferring Islamic musical styles to Europe, and perhaps also for the concept of "courtly love" which was to change the way that noble Western women were treated.
