Palermo. La Zisa. Central hall. Mosaic decoration.
12th c Sicilian Norman Sicilian Architectural Decoration
(c. 1100 - c. 1300)
Palermo. Sicily. Italy.
In this mosaic from the Norman Palace of La Zisa in Palermo, we can see the Classical Greek motif of the centaur, undoubtedly influenced by an ancient Greek manuscript translated at Roger's court. However, the centaurs flank an old Near Eastern motif of the Tree of Life. Many of the decorative forms of this magnificent Norman palace were created in the Islamic style.
