African art became important to western artists in the early 20th century when artists like Picasso, who were working in Paris, saw pieces of African Sculpture displayed at the ethnological section of the great world expositions. Work like the Baulé Helmet Mask shown on the left, with its powerful simplified forms, clearly influenced the avant-guard costume designs that Picasso did for the ballet Parade.
