But in addition to the simplified geometry, Western artists were also attacked to the mysterious power embodied in much African sculpture, as is illustrated by the large bronze by Jacques Lipchitz shown in the center. On either side of him are Kongo POWER FIGURES which were used in the rituals which gave power to the user. Made from a variety of materials, they changed over time as a result of their use. The figure on right is covered with nails and small metal objects, each of which was ceremonially added when the power of the figure was evoked. The Magical Assemblage on the left made with braided leather shaped around the skull of a chimpanzee is hauntingly powerful. Such objects were kept in secret places and only brought out when needed.
