When you compare the two interiors shown here you can see that the bays of Amiens are much more clearly marked than those of Salisbury. The colonnettes that support the nave vaults continue all the way to the floor at Amiens, clearly distinguishing between each bay, while at Salisbury only the columns that mark the transepts go all the way to the floor; the remainder extend only down to the corbeled arches of the triforium. The total effect is much more horizontal than at Amiens. The unbroken horizontal line at the bottom of the triforium arcade creates the strongest emphasis at Salisbury, while the repeated verticals of the clustered piers of Amiens create the dominant mood there. The nave of Amiens is also much higher in proportion to its width than is that of Salisbury as well as much higher on an absolute scale.
