However, there was another side to the Gothic period. In addition to being a period of great spirituality, it was also a period of great earthiness and irreverence. One cannot help by be surprised by images like this naked bishop displaying his posterior. The image is one of many strange and sometimes shocking images that were carved on MISERICORDS, or the seats in the choir stalls where the monks spent hours singing the required services.
